The Appeal
The W128 220SE Coupe - commonly known as the Ponton Coupe - represents the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz's elegant mid-century two-door grand tourers. Sitting at the top of the Ponton range courtesy of its Bosch mechanically fuel-injected inline-six, the 220SE Coupe was a prestigious and expensive motor car when new, and today it is rightly revered as one of Stuttgart's finest post-war creations. Production numbers were modest, and well-specified, well-restored examples are increasingly difficult to source.
This 1960 car left the factory laden with DM 2,230 worth of optional extras — a substantial sum at the time — headlined by the rare Webasto sliding steel sunroof and a Becker Mexico/Europa radio. The special-order DB 291H Dark Green paint gives the car a distinguished presence. Inside, the specification extends to a Coco/Velour carpet upgrade, luggage compartment trim package, and reclining front seats, all complementing the walnut wood dashboard and leather trim. Having undergone a restoration, the vendor describes this 220SE Coupe as presenting very well throughout. It sits on whitewall tyres with front auxiliary fog lamps, a full chrome exterior trim package, and ivory steering wheel — a handsome and period-correct specification.220SE Ponton Coupe (8).jpg2.95 MB
