G601WAC – 1989 Land Rover Discovery 200 Tdi Land Rover Factory registered.
Built on 1st December 1989.
G601 WAC was ordered by George Hassall (Director of Royal and Diplomatic Affairs at Land Rover)
G601WAC is one of the very earliest Land Rover Discoveries to have left the production line and be assigned the iconic G-WAC factory registration. It was despatched to the Engineering Department to be used for quality testing at the Lode Lane factory in Solihull. She retains original pre-production/ early production features and was professionally rebuilt from her original bare chassis up in 2017/ 18. G601WAC has featured in magazines and, most recently, was selected to feature in a 10-page article in “Retro-Car Magazine” in September 2022.
Pre-Covid G601WAC was used by the current owner to tour throughout Europe, Spain and Portugal. In 2022, she was on-tour again, this time the Scottish Highlands and Outer Hebrides for a summer of camping and wild-exploration. She has been totally reliable on all her recent expeditions and returns well over 30MPG even when carrying 5 adults and towing an ex-army Penman trailer.
Her professional restoration in 2017/ 18 encompassed: Complete strip-down to bare chassis. The chassis was superb and required little more than shot-blasting and powder-coating. The body shell was completely stripped bare and rebuilt using original factory steel panels then completely repainted inside and out before reassembly. All outer panels stripped bare, repaired as required and repainted. Engine fully stripped and rebuilt with new turbo, injectors/ injector pump, full clutch and consumables such as timing belt, water pump, radiator, coolant pipes etc. New brakes including servo. Running gear inspected, striped, and refurbished as required. Suspension refurbished with heavy-duty rear springs for towing. Original factory wheels pristine with new Goodyear tyres. Her original sonar blue upholstery and interior is original and excellent, with a brand-new headlining fitted by Nationwide trim. Her cabin is water-tight from the rain.
Original sonar-blue fabric handbook, factory build sheet, and accompanying file is with the vehicle.
Without doubt one of the best, most original, G-WAC Land Rover Discovery 200Tdis to have survived. She has proven herself to be super-reliable on recent expeditions and ready for her next adventure.
Very few early Discoveries have had a full nut and bolt restoration as the costs are likely to be in the region of £40-50k to do one to this standard. This is without doubt an exceedingly rare opportunity.
Lovely history file with early provenance from Land Rover and magazines it has featured in. Find another in this condition!?
