A superbly presented and detailed example of a Westfield XI.
Engineer, racing driver and owner of an original Lotus Eleven, Chris Smith built his first XI in 1982 as a faithful copy of the original car. The result was a great success and such was the interest, Smith formed Westfield Sportscars and the XI was made available to customers in kit form.
This particular example was constructed by a retired marine engineer. It was completed early in 2018 and subsequently IVA tested successfully. It is correctly registered as a Westfield and also registered with a period dateless number .
The chassis is a spaceframe like the original. It is clad in aluminium lower panels with the remainder of the bodywork in fibreglass. The body features an integral headrest, as per the “Le Mans” version of the original.
Power is provided by a 1275cc BMC A Series engine taken from an MG Midget transmitting through the excellent Ford Type 9 five-speed gearbox to an MG Midget back axle.
The Westfield is beautifully finished in dark British Racing Green with a contrasting dark red interior, redolent of Lotus racing cars from the period. The car carries Team Lotus decals and is presented very much like a works car from the 1956 Le Mans 24 Hours.
In 2019 the car was bought by a friend of the builder and has been used very sparingly since, with fewer than 300 miles having been covered since its completion.
Other features of note include 13 inch Minilite-style wheels, a dark red tonneau cover to match the seats, period registration mark, racing type harnesses and a discreet USB port in the cockpit.
The cockpit is very comfortable and there is room for the taller driver. The doors drop down on horizontal hinges to gain access.
There is a small history file containing a Builders Guide, MoT Test Certificate (valid until June 2023), V5C and a sales brochure.
Out on the road the Westfield is a delight to drive with exceptional steering, handling and braking as you would expect. As the car weighs very little, the 1275cc A Series engine provides ample performance.
This is a very nicely constructed car with some thoughtful touches and will surely provide a huge amount of fun for the next owner.
