Description
This superbly presented Mercedes Benz 280SL Automatic is a RHD, UK Home Market example that was first registered on the 28TH August 1968. The Pagoda has come to us from one of our regular clients based in Cheshire who is a true Mercedes Benz SL enthusiast and in the four years of doing business with us, has owned four of these iconic late 1960’s SL’s. The recent owner is currently having another Pagoda completely rebuilt, and as completion draws closer he has decided to now sell this fine example. The idea of owing this 280SL was purely to have an on the button, usable Pagoda in the garage, ready to use and enjoy without hesitation whilst awaiting his other car to be rebuilt and we are now pleased to have collected the car and offer it onto the market.
The condition of this 280SL is impressive, the car has a very original feel to it but from the condition its clear to see at times in its life it has had serious expenditure. The bodywork is incredibly sharp with lovely, straight clean panels. The Metallic Gold paint finish is impressive with a fabulous, deep gleam and chrome work is of a very high standard throughout. The SL was clearly painted many years ago, but general appearance is that of a car that was perhaps restored 5/ 10 years ago. The underside is excellent, the car structurally outstanding throughout and the engine bay has been subject to a major program of detailing and presents beautifully with sharp, bright inner wings and very clean detailed ancillaries and engine. The interior was subject of a re-trim over ten years ago, leather seats are in excellent order, door cards lovely and clean, carpets excellent and the dashboard and dials all look very smart. Both hard top and Black mohair soft top are in very good condition and the car would not look out of place on the show scene.
There is no doubt this 280SL has been maintained to a very high standard and a comprehensive file of invoices from the 1990's and 2000's support this. The Mercedes Benz has only covered 3500 miles over the past 19 years but during the 1990's it was covering serious miles, proving incredibly reliable over thousands of miles of touring. As evidence, in 1994 the SL had a recorded mileage of 62160 and over the next ten years covered an impressive 33, 000 miles taking the mileage to 95, 583. From 1995 to 2004 the car was with a North London based owner and maintenance was carried out with no expense spared with well-established Mercedes Benz experts Roger Edwards Motors looking after the car. Invoices are on file detailing all maintenance and upkeep. The 2. 8 litre Mercedes Benz engine holds excellent oil pressure, offers impressive performance and is strong, fit and healthy. The automatic gearbox changes up and down smoothly, and the car holds the road incredibly well. Supplied with a full 12 months MOT and full service, this 280SL Pagoda is a truly beautiful iconic car that can be driven and enjoyed with confidence and has the provenance of being a correct, home market RHD example.
