As the brainchild of legendary European car importer Max Hoffman, the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Roadster was designed to serve as a more lifestyle-oriented complement to the extraordinarily expensive, racing-derived 300 SL. Hoffman suggested the smaller car share the 300 SL’s curvaceous, instantly recognizable shape, allowing both the hardtop coupe and the subsequent roadsters to share a design language that was unique to the Stuttgart automaker in the early 1950s. Both the six-cylinder 300 SL and four-cylinder 190 SL models received much acclaim from contemporary news outlets. Unsurprisingly, the less expensive 190 SL vastly outsold its “big brother,” proving that Hoffman’s knack for success was unparalleled among automobile importers. Both the 190 SL and the 300 SL were virtually identical cosmetically in roadster form and thus gave birth to the legendary Mercedes-Benz SL-CLass.
The magnificent 1956 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Roadster featured here is finished in classic and highly desirable Black over a Deep Red interior with a Black folding convertible top. This exquisite motorcar was beautifully restored and is ready to be shown or driven. A recent service was performed with all new tires, hoses, and the like.
