I’ve owned my rare Citroen CX GTi Turbo Maikonics for about 10 years. This is a good car that has the makings of a really great car, but after 10 years and changing circumstances plus the fact that I simply don’t drive it means I have taken the decision to sell. I welcome any enquiries and viewings. The car will have a new battery at point of sale.

I bought it from Denis Spencer of Centreville, Newcastle, who sold it to me as an exercise in downsizing. The key strengths then as now are the very fine gas-flowed and ported engine and the Maikonics-adjusted AEi unit which is tucked up in the dash above the glovebox. It has a gearbox from a diesel CX for the slightly longer 5th gear. Denis installed a competition clutch, also with very little wear. A CX specialist (now retired) built a new wiring loom for the injectors, and I replaced the coils, HT leads and various other bits and pieces. It also has the slightly wider Michelin TRX 220 tyres, all 4 in good condition. All the hydraulics – brakes, steering and suspension - are also all in good condition (serviced at Pleiades in Sawrty in March 2022). Turbo spheres are fitted and are also fine (Denis had intended to fit BX GTi spheres for added stiffness). The front disks, pads and handbrake pads were replaced (April 2023, sourced from Der Franzose). As a result, this car is rapid, and fun to drive.

When I got the car the original turbo seat cloth was delaminating and the headlining sagging. I had the seats covered in part-leather, part-cloth at BJ Car Trimmers in East Hanningfield (Essex) and replaced the headlining myself. I also had all the lower dash parts – the glove box and frame and the covers beneath the steering column – re-flocked.

There is also very little rust. The car had had new sills before my ownership. I have had the front floor pans repaired and I have also had 3 of the 4 jacking points repaired and strengthened, so underneath is in good condition. The doors are all in good condition, with minor rust spots just appearing in the front and rear nearside doors. The paint work is okay, but could do with a refresh or a respray. The bonnet is in good condition, but could do with repositioning.

Other aspects of the car worth noting are the new radiator, various new bits such as the radiator temperature sensor, crank and starter sensors, starter motor and reconditioned injection unit (above the driver’s footwell). Also new-ish are the fuel pump and fuel filter. I installed Clarion speakers in all 4 doors and a Kenwood active subwoofer under the front passenger seat with a Blaupunkt head unit, so this sounds good. The map reading light works, as do the Cibie fog lamps. The driver’s seat is currently sitting on a Series 2 frame (so is height-adjustable) but I have an original Series 1 frame to include in the sale. The car came with and still has Series 2 wing mirrors. Note that the electronic passenger side mirror is not wired to the Series 1 wiring loom because they don’t match.

The things a buyer needs to know: the interior heater blows constant warm air, so needs sorting out for comfortable driving in summer. The air-conditioning is not in, but included will be the compressor and a new aircon radiator with a new frame and the pipes. I also have a new drying unit and the fast idle valve. When the slide switch for the heater blower is in the air-con position it blows a fuse, so this also needs sorting out. Otherwise the electronics (a traditional CX bug-bear) are generally reliable. The only other aspect is that the Turbo exhaust blows from a gap between the front silencer and the incoming pipes (there’s one for sale on ebay - probably cheaper than CX Basis). We paste it up but it blows again after a while. Personally, I think a stainless steel exhaust would be good upgrade.

This is a CX that sits apart from most other CXs – all of which are fine cars in their own right. But this is a good car that could be a truly exceptional car in the right hands. It’s MOT’d until 16/ 05/ 2024. Viewings welcome.
