Tel:the details below (North Tyneside). 1950 Jaguar Mark V 3½ litre for about six years. The Mark V was manufactured in June 1950 and immediately exported to Australia via dealer Brylaw Motors (Melbourne). The owner was Mr Keith Mitchell of Roleystone.
1982 to 1986, it was the subject of a massive restoration by Jaguar specialists Roadbend Motors of Welshpool, Western Australia. The car was then reputed to be “the Best Mark V in Australia”. Kevin has comprehensive hand-written workshop reports and parts requisitions from that period.
Roadbend Motors is still in business, and run by the same Percival family.
In 1990, the car was repatriated to the UK and registered WSU 826.
August 1994 saw the Mark V purchased from Benson Classics of Leeds by Albert “Ted” Dubber from Pontefract, West Yorkshire.
Ted was active around the local car clubs and shows and improved the car with a new manifold, stainless steel exhaust system and new wiring loom, and fastidious maintenance.
Sadly, Ted Dubber passed away and, in September 2015, the car was acquired by David Lloyd of Wakefield. David continued the good work with attention to chromework, body & paintwork, front & rear suspension, cooling system, brakes and significant engine work (re-bore, new pistons etc).
Both David and Ted served as Committee members of the Yorkshire Thoroughbred Car Club.
In September 2017, WSU 826 was bought by the current owner, Kevin Brown.
Surprisingly, the engine demanded further attention and was rebuilt by a new and enthusiastic company in the North East in February 2018, with new bearings, gaskets/ seals etc. Unfortunately, this work was simply not good enough and Kevin bit the bullet!
WSU 826 was sent to the workshops of renowned Jaguar specialist Ken Jenkins (Carlton Autos of Worksop, Nottinghamshire). Ken meticulously dismantled, checked, overhauled/ balanced all components and rebuilt the 3½ litre six cylinder engine. He also overhauled the steering box and column.
The SU carburettors were later comprehensively overhauled by Heritage Classics of Teeside.
The engine is smooth, powerful and responsive, and the car now drives perfectly.
I have have taken the car to events around the North East, usually picking up ‘Car of the Day’ awards. WSU 826 attracts more attention than any Ferrari!
