The Morgan Plus 4 Drop Head Coupé (DHC) is a rare variant of the range manufactured from 1950 to 1968. Just 433 of these cars were produced during this time. As a late example of the Flat Rad model this one is even rarer as the cars turned to the more recognisable cowled radiator around this time.
This car was manufactured in 1952 and has its original Standard Vanguard 2088cc engine. The low production numbers were due to the Coupe’s more expensive price tag as the car was considerably more expensive to produce. There are now very few of these remarkably attractive cars still in existence. This car has had just two owners prior to the current one with the first owner having the car for most of its life. Always garaged and cosseted this rare survivor is in excellent condition.
The more complex build resulted in a car with greater creature comforts than the roadster with far superior weather protection from both the side windows and an easily operated two position roof. The car also benefits in this respect from a fixed front windscreen, full size doors and externally, a small chrome strip that runs down the side of the car. The overall appearance is one of elegance and unlike the roadster, the more upright rear profile affords some luggage room which makes this car a practical proposition for touring with room for a couple with modest suitcases behind the seats. The car still has the performance of its sibling but is far more practical and with the full size doors and taller roofline, much easier to get in and out of

MCD 40 also benefits from a recent full engine and gearbox rebuild coupled to a Stainless Steel exhaust system. The engine, when rebuilt, was upgraded to a sealed cooling system with an electric water pump and fitted with a Kenlowe electric fan thus alleviating any issues with overheating. It also has upgraded twin circuit hydraulic brakes for safety, a new clutch, replacement radiator core, alternator and high torque starter motor. It was also converted at the time of rebuild for use with modern fuels and fitted with modern lighting inside the original units. It is fair to say that the car is in tip top mechanical condition and completely reliable. The ash frame and bodywork, chassis and running gear are also all in excellent condition. There is an extensive history file with the car detailing all the upgrades.
The car pulls strongly in all gears and brakes evenly. It is a joy to drive and keeps up with modern traffic. It is also extremely comfortable to travel in and ideal for longer journeys. Once behind the wheel everything falls to hand and the precise Moss gearbox coupled with the smooth power from the Vanguard engine and that distinctive exhaust note are a joy making this a true drivers car. It has that pedigree feel one only gets in the quality marques.
Overall this car represents a perfect and practical choice for touring rallies or weekends away here in the UK or in Europe with a rarity that will attract much interest. It has just been returned to its original paint colour in which it left the factory and the wheels have been stripped and powder coated to match, so it has unmarked and perfect fresh paint coupled with a lovely patina from the beautifully original and comfortable red leather seats and interior that money just can’t buy. The hood has two positions, part and fully down, and this too is in excellent condition.
There is nothing to do except enjoy this wonderful and good looking rarest of cars.
