CONDITION AND HISTORY
The Mercedes-Benz R129 SL arrived in 1989, launching the world's best loved open top grand tourer into the 1990s with style. The chrome and black rubber exterior that was synonymous with the previous generation was gone; in favour of a clean, angular design that has stood the test of time. The Bruno Sacco penned silhouette looks as good today as it did when we first saw it in the late 1980s.
This new SL offered all of the luxury and panache that SL owners had become used to, with a range of powerful engines, trim levels and options.
The car shown here is finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic with Anthracite Leather, a typically Germanic specification and iconic combination for any classic Mercedes-Benz.
Built in late 1994, it was delivered to the UK in November of that year but not registered until August of 1995. Ordered from the factory with some choice options, the first owner added heated front seats, rear passenger seats, adjustable mirrors with memory, air conditioning with automatic climate control and paintwork protection. With the list price of the 5. 0 litre V8 SL and the options, this car would have left the showroom with a price tag somewhere around £80, 000.
Today the car has covered just over 132, 000 miles, and comes with documentation that details a lifetime of love and attention. The paperwork that accompanies this car is extensive, including many hand written notes by owners and evidence that it once wore at least one very expensive cherished registration number.
One of our favourite documents within the history file is from 2009, a hand drawn table comparing 13 different SLs that were on eBay at the same time, drawn up to help with either valuing the car or purchasing it! Little clues of the life this car has lived and the people who have cared for it.
Most recently the car was given an impressive overhaul by a classic Mercedes-Benz specialist. As well as the annual service, the car also underwent a significant amount of work to ensure everything is operating as it should be. This included work to the hard and soft top, suspension, transmission, brakes and more - the resulting bill totals more than £7, 000. Around the same time, the soft top received three new windows and the driver seat was repaired.
The combination of many years of careful ownership and the recent works make this a very appealing car indeed, a car that has stood the test of time and with the many of the problem areas that these cars suffer being recently addressed.
