1915 Stanley Mountain Wagon

Stanley steam cars were made from 1897 to 1927. The "Mountain Wagons" were developed to take guests 35 miles uphill from the train station in Loveland, Colorado into the heart of the Colorado Rockies to the Stanley Hotel. This was a climb with gradients that few cars with combustion engines could manage at the time. The Mountain Wagons performed with ease and were built from 1909 to 1917.

This Stanley was restored / newly built by the owner between 2018 and 2019. The starting point was a neglected chassis, axles, wheels and engine from a 1922 Stanley 740. These parts have virtually the same specifications as an original mountain wagon.

“Mountie” is a model 820, 30 hp mountain wagon with a 12-seater wooden body on a steel chassis. About half of the parts are original Stanley, the other half are very accurately reproduced parts. The hood is made from original parts. The four sofas are covered in leather. The car is included in the American Stanley register as a successful re-creation.

The car has a Dutch license plate and can transport 9 people. This means that the car can be driven with a B driving license.

The original two-cylinder, double-acting steam engine is mounted with a direct gear drive from the crankshaft to the rear axle. There is no gearbox. The top speed is 75 km per hour. There are only 13 moving parts in the engine and a total of 24 in the entire vehicle. The engine rotates less than twice (40:60) for each revolution of the wheels.

The 30 hp steel steam boiler operates at 600 psi (41 Bar) and contains 990 copper tubes. It is hydraulically tested to 1000 psi (69 Bar). The car is not really economical. For 100 km you use approximately 40 liters of diesel-petrol mixture and 300 liters of water. The car weighs approximately 1800 kg.

Delivery worldwide possible, possibly including one day of instruction.
The boiler was built in England in 2019 by a certified builder. The boiler has been inspected biannually by Lloyds and has Dutch papers. valid until 12-2025

A closed aluminum trailer can also be taken over if necessary. The steam car fits exactly into this. This steam car and trailer weighs approximately 3000 kg. Axles, wheels and tires are approximately 3 years old.
