Unmodified E39 BMW 528I with rare manual box, which in my opinion is best for this motor.
I bought this last year from a gentleman who had bought himself a new car, and had pretty much forgotten about the poor E39, leaving it in storage.
The car needed quite a bit of work to get it to drive how it should, including:-
- Valve Cover Gasket replacement
- Torn intake pipe replaced
- Crank position sensor
- Suspension arm front
- Full service including fuel filter and spark plugs
- Passenger seat occupancy sensor due to SRS fault (this was not just hidden with an emulator and has been replaced with a genuine OEM part)
I also replaced the shift boot and handbrake boot as well the shift knob with a genuine brand new ZHP M Sport shift knob. I did this as the original set had seen better days and improved the interior massively for such a small thing. I also have a 545i short shifter kit with new cup that I intended to fit, but just haven't had the time!
I'm certain there was more, but it's all documented with the relevant paperwork. There is also a stack of paperwork from the previous owner.
So, this is an old car now, and by extension it's not perfect. It's got some scuffs, a dent on the rear quarter (looks like it could be PDR'd) and stone chips to the front. On the interior, there is wear to the driver's bolster and the pixels are starting to go. However, this car is not rotting away like a lot of E39s and it is in mechanically great condition with the motor being an absolute joy to use.
With the mechanical upkeep out of the way, the new owner can slowly sort the aesthetics out should they wish without worrying about the mechanics.
