In early 1974, the boys at Abarth Works were quietly cutting away at the newly released Fiat X1/ 9. With the Fiat 124 Spyder still dominating the Italian rally circuits, Abarth felt its days were numbered and were quick to put forward the X1/ 9 to Fiats as their new rally weapon. With a re-enforced Chassis, upgraded suspension, bumper delete, wheels arch extensions, large spoiler on the front and rear and the iconic large air intake from the engine cover nick named Periscopio the X1/ 9 Abarth burst into the group 5 prototype class and quickly became a formidable contender winning outright on its 3rd outing. Sadly, when time came for the 400 homologations to be built in order to get into group 4 rally, Fiat decided not to proceed and only 5 X1/ 9 Abarth's were produced, 4 race cars and one road car, however enthusiasts have been building replicas out of X1/ 9's ever since.
This particular tribute vehicle started off life as a 1979 series Speciale 1300cc. The engine has been fitted with twin double 40 down draughts, 35/ 75 billet cam, aluminium race radiator, rare FAZA Periscop and a Di Fulvio full stainless racing exhaust resulting in around 120-130bhp which is fed to the rear wheels via the 4-speed transmission and a very rare Dallara spec LSD. The interior is stripped and minimal with Sabelt racer duos bucket seats, Sabelt 6 point belts, quick release steering, Rallysafe GPS and is is homologated to NZ/ AUS Motorsports standards along with a MSA log book. This X1/ 9 is currently set up for gravel events and has full adjustable suspension.
