This Mercedes is a 124 series 2 door, Sportline, automatic coupe, with a 2960cc SOHC straight 6 Engine.
I have owned this car for 21 years. The present mileage is 176, 200 and it is currently taxed and is MOT’d to 25th July 2024.
It features a Sportline chassis that has a stiffened suspension, faster geared steering and a smaller ‘electrically-adjustable-for-reach’ steering wheel.
The coil springs have been replaced with standard versions. This was done in order to avoid scraping the underside of the car and the stainless steel exhaust system when slowing for “sleeping policemen”.
There are two original keys and a central locking fob.
Other features include ABS, Automatic locking differential (ASD) and Acceleration skid control (ASR). ‘Over the shoulder’ electrically provided seat belts for the driver and passenger and an electrically adjustable exterior mirror on the passenger side.
All windows are electrically operated and when fully down give a pillar-less open look.
Both front seats are fully electrically adjustable including headrest height.
The alternator was replaced in May 2021. The battery was replaced in April 2023 and is guaranteed for 3 years.
The nearside front wing was replaced 5 years ago.
The Original manual and service books with old MOT certificates and supporting service receipts are available.
Areas of note.
The heated rear window is not operational. There is slight wear and tear on the leather of the drivers seat. The interior trim at the seat belt point on the driver’s side needs attention as can be seen in the photos. The nearside rear window only operates from the dedicated switch at the passenger side and not from the drivers switch position. The sliding/ pop-up sunroof has had the fuse removed because the external seal needs replacing. The radio operated electrical aerial is not functioning. The headlamp cleaning system has been disabled, but the wipers have been kept as a spare and are still available. The alloy wheels need to be refurbished.
The detail Mercedes put into the mechanical and esthetic design and manufacture of the C124 series means this car can now be considered as a highly regarded modern classic and a well appointed prestigious four-seat coupe. What makes this version of the 124 series stand out is the 'Sportline' specification.
To the best of my knowledge, the car was originally purchased and registered in Germany by the first owner in September 1990 then imported and driven over to Wiltshire. In time it made it’s way to Scotland.
The car is a really smooth runner and on a warm summers day is a delight to drive with the windows open giving a pillarless open feel and despite its age, the Sportline chassis still gives a sporty ride.
