With non-running restoration projects being offered at much the same price, this is a superb opportunity to acquire a classic British sportscar that can be enjoyed immediately and perhaps improved over time. The MGB was introduced in 1962 initially as just a 2-seater roadster with a close-coupled GT arriving 3 years later providing more space for the family man. All cars (other than the V8 variant) came with the 1798cc B-Series engine producing 95bhp and the choice of 4-speed manual gearbox or optional Borg-Warner automatic. Electronically engaged overdrive was available on all manual models, operated by a dash-mounted toggle switch on all pre-1977 cars effective on both 3rd and 4th gears. A big change came in late 1974 when US impact regulations deemed the need for heavier rubber bumpers replacing the classic chrome fitments with a consequent nose restyle and suspension tweak owing to the increased weight. Production ceased in 1980.
Our car was first registered in April 1975 and was supplied new to a gentleman in Middlesex. Sadly, we know very little of it`s history but understand that it was restored around 15 years ago and converted to Sebring specification at the same time, a “look” that emanated from the classic North American endurance race. This has principally meant removal of both front and rear bumpers and replacement with smoothed front and rear panels incorporating air ducts for radiator and brake cooling. It is possible to acquire a full Sebring wing set (from suppliers such as Moss Europe) which ultimately would take the car to the next level. The choice is endless! We acquired the car from a local MG enthusiast who reluctantly had to sell the car in favour of saving up a deposit for his first house.
The car presents just as can be seen in the photographs. Both bodywork and paintwork are generally excellent with just a little bubbling around the front wing seems. Rear wings and arches, bottoms of doors and sills are all very good as is the underside and all-important castle sections. The swath-line is clean and arrow-straight, glass all good and tidy painted Rostyle wheels are shod with matching Pirelli rubber all `round. Inside, front seats have been replaced with Black leather items complemented by Black door-cards, carpets and trim. All is clean and presentable. Turn the key and the ever-reliable B-Series fires up immediately sounding very sporty, settling down off-choke to a low burble. On the road, the B rides beautifully with plenty of eager acceleration, neutral handling and excellent brakes. I have been using it daily these past few days for both short and longer runs and it has been an absolute delight. The Overdrive on 3rd and 4th gears provides superb long-distance cruising ability - it really is a very easy classic to both drive and live with.
The MG comes with a current V5C and is naturally both MoT and road tax exempt.
