SUMMARY

The S124 was probably the best estate car ever made (in my opinion) and very few cars have really come close since. Supplied by Esplanade Mercedes, and looked after by them for many years, this 300TD is almost the "Holy Grail"(again in my opinion) a late pre-facelift S124 with the stoic OM603 straight six 12 valve diesel in gorgeous 249 Malachite Green. I've been trying to buy this car for the last five years, but at the last moment, the owner kept changing his mind, however in May he eventually relented, and here it is now.

Although showing four previous keepers on the V5, this car has essentially had just two owners, as the first owner registered under his company, his own and his wife’s name, probably for tax efficiency reasons and what suited the tax regime at the time.

It's been serviced as required, however in the last four years its covered very few miles, so I’ve gone over the car with a fine tooth comb, as well as giving it a major service. All the work I’ve done in preparation is detailed above. The car comes with a stamped up service book containing 23 stamps, as well as large A4 lever arch file containing lots of supporting paper work, as well as every old MOT certificate going back 28 years, when the car first needed it's first MOT in 1996.

Bodywork, as you can probably see from the photos is excellent, however as with all cars this age, it isn’t perfect; there are two areas that will need some remedial work in the future, these are the near side rear wheel arch, where the bumper joins the panel, and the usual W124 place on the off side front wing leading edge, where it joins the bumper. I felt that these don’t require immediate attention just yet and as such don’t detract from the stunning appearance of this car. Other than usual minor age-related stuff, this car is just beautiful, and really does attract lots and lots of positive attention. I find Malachite Green is currently one of the most sought after colours for this era of Mercedes, and one I think really suits the lines of the Sacco era cars.

As you’d expect of a well maintained W124, this car drives superbly and as with all Mercedes Diesels of this era is so incredibly and inexplicably addictive. It’s not fast but is more than adequate and can happily sit at 70-80mph on the motorway all day long, just sipping fuel. When I bought this car I drove it 260 miles home from South Wales, and it was a cossetting and relaxing experience. I arrived home after a near six-hour journey still feeling refreshed; for a car of this age that’s quite incredible, and clearly demonstrates just how brilliant these cars are.

So, if you’ve been looking for one of these, you’ll know good S124’s aren’t exactly growing on trees, and once this one has gone, its unlikely I’ll see another like it for quite some time, if at all. Also as you would expect, I’ve had a lots of interest in this car, in fact I wish I had another ten like this! As such I’m going to have to work on a first come first served basis, and unfortunately and unavoidably there’s going to be quite a few disappointed prospective buyers.

MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES

MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!

My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the majority of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too

MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.

THE MTSV DIFFERENCE

Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business. To read more, see my website.

Any other questions, please feel free to contact me. I've been dealing in Mercedes-Benz vehicles for almost 20 years, but I'm a firstly and foremostly a true car enthusiast of many, many years, and a Mercedes Club Member, so it's always a pleasure to meet and speak to like-minded people.

Finally, I'm situated in Keighley, West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.
