The "SC" (Super Carrera) acronym was used for the first time since the 356 SC. Equipped with a 3. 0-litre aluminium engine, it adopted Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and a 5-speed 915 manual gearbox. The initial aim was to replace the 911 with the 928, but its commercial success led Porsche to review its strategy and extend production of the model. In 1981, a cabriolet prototype with all-wheel drive was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The production version, which went on sale in 1983, became the first Porsche cabriolet since the 356 of the 1960's. The SC model benefited from an optimised chassis and more robust bodywork. A total of 58, 914 units were produced up to 1983. It was under the management of Peter W. Schutz that the 911 was saved from retirement, marking a decisive turning point for Porsche. The legacy of the SC contributes to the durability of the 911 model, which remains a pillar of the brand.
