Production of the Renault 5 Turbo was complicated. First of all, boxes of Renault 5s were taken from the production lines at Flins. They were then sent to Cerizay, where Heuliez extended the body by 5cm, fitted the firewall and rear skirt and installed the aluminium parts. The second truck trip was back to Flins to finalise the body.
The third trip was to Dieppe, where Berex assembled the wings, bonnet, powertrain and interior on the Alpine A310 assembly line. The first cars then made their way to the dealerships. 802 Renault 5 Turbos were built in the first year, more than enough to qualify them for competition. The reception was fairly good. The feeling was there, and the turbo effect that the driver felt at 4, 000 rpm was impressive. In fact, the car was complicated to operate. Although the fact that it was a rear-wheel drive car was not a problem, its optimum engine range was between 4, 000 and 6, 500 rpm! The year 1981 really propelled it into another dimension. Barely out of the box, the Renault 5 Turbo was legendary. Production figures fell, however, and the 1982 model year brought the first changes. The big change in the Renault 5 Turbo arrived and was presented at the 1982 Paris Motor Show with the Turbo 2. Cost-cutting operation. Everything that was too expensive was replaced, with aluminium panels being replaced by steel. The wings and bumpers, dyed in the mass on the first cars, were now black, whatever the colour of the bodywork. Lastly, the interior was no longer specific and original, but the same as the R5 Alpine Turbo.
