The 9-3X concept, a preview of the next-generation 9-3, premiered in January 2002 at the 'North American Interntational Auto Show' and arrived in showrooms for the 2003 model year. The convertible body 9-3 began production in 2004 and the estate variant in 2005. Four trim levels were offered to bidding customers and these were: the entry-level Linear, mid-range Vector and Arc (with emphasis on sporty appeal and luxury), and a top-of-the-range Aero model. The 9-3 would be given a 2. 8 L turbocharged V6 in 2006 which was a welcome addition for many of Saab's customers and long standing fans who yearned for the days of the 'Turbo' and 'Carlsson' models.
