Supplied new by Alton Motors in Robertson, South Africa, this lovely W116 S Class has been in the UK for a couple of years.
It has never been restored or welded, it has been re-painted at some stage, and the underside and bodywork show no evidence of the rust or repairs normally associated with this model.
It has an automatic gearbox, power steering, air conditioning which has been converted for modern gas and handraulic windows, and is fitted with a Weber carburettor to replace the original Pierburg unit. The exhaust is stainless steel and a modern radio is fitted.
It is an enjoyable old girl to pilot with plenty of power, a smooth gearbox and good road manners. The big leather seats are very comfortable and the doors shut with a nice 'thunk'. It is much better built than modern offerings and the quality of the fixtures and fittings is excellent.
The original Mercedes book pack includes manuals and a stamped Service Book up 94, 000 kilometres, then a gap to the final stamp in 2018 at 196, 000 kms. It was serviced again at 198, 000 in 2023 and has now covered 200, 000 kms.
This superb '70s luxo-barge could be used regularly or could be an ideal entrant for a long distance event as it remarkably rust free and very comfortable.
