Description
‘54 Volkswagen Barndoor Splitscreen | Fully Restored | RHD | 11-Window
‘A Masterclass in Barndoor Restoration’
Displaying 90, 261 miles (non-verified), this stunning 1954 RHD Barndoor Splitscreen is a truly exceptional example of one of the rarest and most desirable early VW buses in existence. Fully restored and meticulously refined over the years, this 11-window bus is in outstanding condition both mechanically and cosmetically, benefitting from one of the most comprehensive restoration journeys we’ve seen—totaling up to £119, 000 in documented work.
Originally restored by IRVS Restorations, with custom paintwork by Andy Finch at Spikes Vintage Restorations, this Barndoor has had every inch professionally evaluated and perfected. The metalwork and panel replacement was carried out to an exacting standard by specialists, while the underside has recently been stripped back, rebuilt, and repainted to ensure it remains in superb condition underneath as well as up top.
The drivetrain features a freshly built Type 4 engine by Autotechniks, upgraded to 1911cc with 96mm pistons and cylinders, a CP performance crankshaft, 40-IDF Webers, a bespoke Nick Hausmann performance exhaust, and a gearbox featuring a 3. 88 ring and pinion. Power delivery is strong, smooth, and dependable — and importantly, the bus drives exactly as it should, without the vague handling or wandering feel so common in lesser builds. It feels genuinely dialled in, balanced, and confident on the road.
Inside, the vehicle has been professionally sound-deadened to create a refined, quieter cabin. The full custom interior by Airteriors features a beautifully trimmed modified rock n roll bed, Bluetooth sound system, blackout curtains, and custom rear speaker pods painted to match the body. The front bench seat, rear cushions, rubber matting, and carpet were all completed by Bromsgrove Auto Trimmers. The result is an interior that is as functional as it is beautiful — equally suited to shows or long summer road trips.
One of the things that really sets this Barndoor apart is the overall fit and finish. So many early buses suffer from poor alignment, reproduction parts, or hasty restoration shortcuts. But here, you can feel the quality: the doors shut with the satisfying “click” of a modern car, thanks to the extensive use of original parts and care in assembly. It’s rare to find a Barndoor that not only looks the part, but drives and behaves like a sorted, complete vehicle.
This bus is a credit to every craftsman who has worked on it. And now it’s ready for the next chapter.
