Offered for sale is an exceptional and remarkably original 1986 Ford Escort XR3i Mk4, finished in rare and desirable Rosso Red (Code R5) — a colour used only on the earliest examples before Ford introduced Radiant Red. With just 27, 276 genuine miles from new, this iconic hot hatch is a true survivor and a standout example of one of the defining cars of the 1980s.
Originally supplied by Crystal Ford of Hull on the 12th of August 1986, this car has led a carefully sheltered life. Within its first year, it passed through two owners before being acquired in 1987 by a retired professor who would keep it for nearly 28 years. For the majority of that time, the car was lovingly stored in a garage and taken off the road entirely for 23 years. Discovered and sympathetically recommissioned by KGF Classic Cars nearly a decade ago, it has since been part of two well-known enthusiast collections. A major service and cambelt change were carried out in November 2024, ensuring it remains mechanically on point.
The bodywork is beautifully preserved and stands out for its uniform, glossy finish — a genuine Rosso Red, not the more commonly seen Radiant. There’s no sign of the typical fading red pigment often found on unrestored examples. A small ding on the bonnet and minor blemishes are present but do little to detract from the overall finish. The original dealer plates are still fitted, and the boot spoiler has been colour-coded to a high standard. Underneath, the car is remarkably clean, unwelded, and untouched by aftermarket underseal — exactly what collectors look for.
Step inside and you’re transported straight back to 1986. The interior is a superb time capsule, complete with Daytona pattern seat trim (Code SF) and the distinctive Cool Black XR3i headlining, both of which remain in outstanding condition. The carpets are unmarked, the dash is free from cracks, and the interior plastics retain their original soft-touch feel. Even the Ford ESRT 32PS radio/ cassette system is fully operational, complete with its quirky ‘joystick’ balance control. The only minor flaw is some lifting on one of the armrests — easily addressed, and common on these models. The two-spoke steering wheel still shows prominent factory texturing, hinting at just how lightly this car has been used.
Mechanically, the car is completely standard, just as Ford intended. The 1. 6L Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injected engine starts effortlessly, delivering 104bhp in a lightweight 945kg package. The driving experience is refreshingly direct and engaging, with 0–60mph reached in 9. 6 seconds and a top speed of 115mph. The 5-speed manual gearbox feels precise and responsive, making this XR3i a genuine joy to drive — whether you're reliving the ‘80s or experiencing it for the first time.
The optional 14” alloy wheels are in superb condition and wear a matching set of Firestone 185/ 60 R14 tyres with excellent tread. Impressively, the original Dunlop Sport D3 spare tyre remains in place. The brakes — servo-assisted with front discs and rear drums — operate smoothly and confidently.
Included with the car is a comprehensive history file, comprising the stamped original service booklet, owner’s handbook, radio guide, two original keys, and the Ford dealer wallet complete with its Crystal Ford sticker. A genuine period sales brochure is also included. Early service records are present, with more recent entries covering its return to the road and continued maintenance up to 2024.
Cars like this — low mileage, unrestored, and lovingly preserved — are becoming increasingly difficult to find. This XR3i offers an irresistible blend of originality, provenance, and classic hot hatch charm. It’s a genuine piece of Ford history and a brilliant collector’s opportunity.
