In 1963, NSU introduced its first model with four cylinders and double chain drive of the overhead camshaft in the NSU Prinz 1000. The air-cooled four-cylinder engine produced 43 horsepower which allowed the car to reach 84 Miles Per Hour. The Prinz 1000, and its successor models were modern for their time – and especially for the car class: the engine had a lot of potential for performance increases with an overhead camshaft and cross-flow cylinder head. Independent suspension with double wishbones on the front axle and a semi-trailing arm rear axle with rubber-mounted joints on the wheels (similar to the small rear-engine cars from FIAT) provided sporty driving characteristics that only BMW and Porsche had to offer at the time. The four-cylinder models from NSU were correspondingly popular and successful with tuners and as a basis for racing. In 1965, the TT sports variant was introduced, and a year later the even more powerful TTS was introduced in very small numbers. In February 1967, the name suffix "Prinz" was dropped and the car was then offered as NSU 1000 or the 1000 C but retained the same charming characteristics which made the 1000 and 1000 C popular to begin with.
