Part of a recent shed discovery of a number of machines
In wonderful patinated condition
Offered with its Swallow Commando sidecar outfit
Norton was founded by James Lansdowne Norton in Birmingham in 1898 and began building motorcycles with French and Swiss engines in 1902. In 1907, a Norton with a Peugeot engine won the first Isle of Man TT race, starting a long tradition of sporting excellence. The Model 1, more commonly known as the Big 4, was made between 1907 and 1954 in various forms, its 633cc engine was the largest and most powerful side-valve engine in the model range and with plenty of low-end torque was ideal for attaching to sidecars. A workhorse in its day, not many have survived today.
On offer here is a wonderfully c. 1948 Norton Big 4 with its original Swallow Commando sidecar, which in its own right is a rare survivor today. The Norton is in remarkable condition for its age, with some signs of a bit of touch-up here and there. It is not known when the vendor purchased this machine, but it was at the back of the shed, which indicates well over 20 years, as there were some machines in front of it. We are advised the Norton has compression and it selects in all gears. This would make a great oily rag machine with minimal work required to put it back on the road 'as is', however, the registration does not appear on a DVLA search. Enticingly being offered at 'no reserve'!
