Launched at the Frankfurt Show in 1985, the 420SL convertible retained its predecessor’s long-running Type 107 bodyshell. The V8 super smooth engined newcomer replaced the outgoing 380SL model and with independent suspension. four-wheel disc brakes and legendary four-speed automatic transmission the car was well received by public and press alike. It is also the rarest of all the R107 variants with just 2, 148 produced.
Milestone Classics have been waiting for an outstanding R107SL for our discerning customers for sometime and when this local car pulled into our car park two weeks ago we could not have been more delighted,
The SL was a 70th birthday gift from the owner’s children in 2008 – they wanted Mum & Dad to have the best Mercedes they could find to enjoy their retirement with.
During the next 12 years the car was used for personal and club road trips around the UK and Europe travelling across Scandinavia, out to Greece, over both the Alps & Dolomites to Italy, Portugal and the South of France bringing immense happiness and generating many memories.
The 1987 R107 has had just 5 owners since 1987 and has always been cherished with regular servicing (30 stamps in service book) and a warranted mileage of 102K miles, so just about run in. On the road the SL drives perfectly, the V8 420 is a marvellous engine that makes all the right noises.
The champagne metallic bodywork is outstanding with excellent paint, a recent replacement hood and factory (body colour) hardtop. The complimentary interior is to the same standard with excellent seats, door panels, carpets and the hardtop comes with a lift (to attach to roof of garage) to help with fitting for the winter.
The large history file has MOT’s back to the first in 1990. factory book pack, lots of invoices and a service book with 30 stamps. The car has always been regularly used and never passed to an owner who could not maintain the SL correctly.
Everybody should own at least one SL – and the R107 V8 is one of the best kept secrets from the Stuttgart factory. They are the perfect long-legged sports coupe equally at home in the golf club carpark (nice big boot) or Monaco harbour following a two-week French road trip with the top down.
