This collector’s vehicle, carefully preserved and restored, is a true enthusiast’s gem. It underwent a full restoration 13 years ago, carried out with remarkable attention to detail.
Bodywork was entrusted to Carrosserie de l’Archer, a workshop renowned for its expertise in restoring classic vehicles. The upholstery and the hood were also redone at this time by specialists, in keeping with the spirit and materials of the originals. The restoration was undertaken with a view to preserving the vehicle’s authenticity. Thus, it is fitted with its original engine, perfectly functional, and its period radio, also in working order – a rare detail appreciated by collectors.
An original analog clock, although not mounted to date, is supplied with the car, adding to its character.
The current owner has owned this car for 12 years, during which it has been carefully maintained and lightly used. Its overall condition reflects the care given to every detail, both aesthetically and mechanically.
To corroborate this level of presentation, a RETROVALUE expert report is available. This document certifies the vehicle’s condition and provides an objective assessment of its current market value.
The Mercedes 190 SL (1958): Open-air elegance
Some cars don’t just drive — they glide, with the grace of a dance on asphalt. The Mercedes 190 SL, particularly in its 1958 version, is one of them. It does not shout its sportiness; it whispers it, with the refinement of a silk breath.
Born in 1955 in the wake of the iconic 300 SL "Gullwing", the 190 SL is its smaller, more accessible sister, yet just as glamorous. At a time when convertibles were often loud or basic, it offered a different vision of the roadster: discreet luxury, comfort and elegance.
Under its long, bulging bonnet, the 1. 9 L four-cylinder develops 105 horsepower. Not raw mechanical ferocity, but smooth, linear driving with a lovely metallic timbre. The 4-speed manual gearbox, precise, invites a relaxed, almost ceremonial drive.
But here it isn’t performance that seduces. It’s style. The flowing lines, the sparkling chrome, the grille proudly adorned with the Mercedes star.
Inside, it’s a craftsman’s jewel. Dashboard colour-matched to the body, chrome-ringed gauges, ivory Bakelite steering wheel… Even the options exude refinement: Becker radio, heater, bespoke luggage. It’s far from a Spartan roadster.
Designed for the Riviera, Beverly Hills or Alpine routes, the 190 SL doesn’t seek speed, but harmony. It embodies a lifestyle, an era without compromise, where one took time to appreciate the mechanics, design and the summer light on a well-born body.
Today, it’s a collectible. And yet, with every turn of the key, with every clink, it reminds us that motoring can still be a form of poetry.
