This car began life as a 1985 “B” reg GSE Auto in Anthracite which was converted to 24v around 2000 by a previous owner. The conversion was not done well and to be frank was a botch. The car was also resprayed Rover Nightfire Red. The donor car was as I understand it stolen recovered silver Carlton GSi which had been written off. The car did not run well but had managed to produce 210 bhp on the rolling road. How I don’t know! It had an ECU from a 12v 2. 6 and was mated to the standard AW Auto box! The previous owner gave me the rolling road printout which was a printed on thermal paper and has long since faded but it was there in black and white including the reg number.
I bought the car in July 2004 with an MOT but as an abandoned project which needed work. Back then the fabled 24v Monza was a bit of a rarity and a novelty and this one was one of the first.
The car was plagued by electrical problems, batteries overcharging, alternator problems and a multitude of other gremlins and minor annoyances.
In January 2005 I sent it for work at GM6 (Monza specialists) where it underwent an extensive overhaul both electrically, mechanically and bodily with the front turrets being completely rebuilt and sealed. In short about £7k of work! (Receipts and photos available)
The car made its VBOA Billing Autobahnstormers debut in July 2005 at Billing and stirred up much interest from inside the club and out.
In July 2006 the car won the Monza Class at Billing and also the best in show The car was exhibited at the NEC Classic Car in November 2006. The car was featured in Total Vauxhall under the headline “Glorious Old Skool Barnstormer”. The car was started showing signs of head gasket failure so I set about trying to source both a donor car and a Getrag manual gearbox.
The new engine donor was another (in)famous club car none other than Non police Senator manual in Rembrandt Silver ‘VNY’ the car had undergone a lot of engine work by a TVR dealer. The Senator had seen better days and had been involved in a minor front end shunt.
The gearbox came from another GSE lost to rust. In the summer of 2007 in became manual and was like a monster reborn.
The mating of the 24v engine to the gearbox was done by a custom lightened and balance flywheel.
In September 2007 it clocked 144mph on the runway at RAF Marham. I swear there was more left but I had run out of runway! Still not bad for a car which left the production line 22 years earlier with a maximum speed of 127 (Auto). That said the car has not been raced, rallied or drifted.
The car is currently SORN’d
Reason for sale
I run my own business and do not have time to invest in the car anymore and coupled to that we have a new baby. Arrrghhh!
It is currently on a pre-1963 non dating Private Plate which is not included in the sale as it alone is worth as much as the car. The car will be returned to its "B" registration.
I am in no hurry to sell and the car is currently garaged (as it always has been in my ownership) if I still have it next year I shall tax it again come the summer and try to resell at this time next year. I love this car!! I am not parting with it lightly.
Offers are invited but I will not be giving it away. This is a classic retro coupe that turns heads where ever it goes. The engine sounds awesome and coupled with an induction kit and at 4000 rpm when the Dual Ram kicks in it is certainly not for the faint hearted, it is sure to put a grin on the face of the driver.
Inspections are welcome by arrangement. I would like to see the car go to another enthusiast who can lavish it with attention, the car is not new and far from concours condition but still a head turner. Please dont expect a new car.
