Description

SAAB 96 Monte Carlo 850 from 1966
1000 units produced
Chassis: 337359

Very rare SAAB 96 in its Monte Carlo version still on the road in a very good condition.

This sporty version of the 96 is named as such in homage to the victories of the famous driver Carlsson during the Monte Carlo rallies in the early 1960s.
It is equipped with specific features such as a headrest on the sole passenger seat or a storage space for helmets hidden under the rear seat.
It is also more powerful than the standard version, with 55 horsepower.
Its peculiarity: an engine fed by three Solex carburettors. A two-stroke with an automatic lubrication system but also front disc brakes.

No more than 1000 units will be produced!

This one belonged to an amateur rally driver who had bought it from the President of the Saab Germany Club.
It is there that it underwent a complete restoration around fifteen years ago.
The car was stripped and a large number of mechanical parts were changed.
A substantial photo dossier allows us to follow the different stages of the restoration: from priming to the full paint, including the complete dismantling of the engine..

The current owner continues to maintain it as he should.
Recently changed:
- clutch actuator/ receiver + release bearing and disc
- fuel pump (replaced with a higher-performance model)
- addition of electronic ignition
- radiator
- brake hoses
He also had the pistons replaced with forged pistons on mechanical advice. The crankshaft has also been rebuilt.

The car presents well but is not concours, the restoration being 15 years old and knowing that the previous owner used to drive it regularly.
We note minor bodywork flaws and the interior would benefit from a detailing to restore its full nobility.
Original colour with its red Toreador Red and the Monte Carlo two-tone red/ grey interior.
Road test is quite conclusive with the note that it has the freewheel clutch option. It starts at the drop of a hat, gear changes are smooth without hiccups.
The instrumentation is functional.

This car has even featured in a specialised automotive press article, who will say it is one of the finest restored.

A unique design, aerodynamics of another era, a Nordic-style engine: here is a special and rare car which, in addition to being uncommon, is a true toy for any rally enthusiast!
