Lot 245
1953 Moto Morini 175cc Turismo
Registration no. 285 XWE
Frame no. A21107
Engine no. 18931 (restamped)
Moto Morini founder Alfonso Morini split from MM in 1937 setting up a foundry in Bologna. Post-WW2 he returned to motorcycle manufacture, commencing with a 125cc two-stroke and then a similar-sized SOHC four-stroke single. The company was active in racing right from the start, and won the Italian national 125 championship in 1949. Something more sophisticated was required for the World Championships however, a new DOHC design being introduced for 1952. 175cc and 250cc twin-cam racers followed, but although the firm did achieve a few successes in Grands Prix, it lacked the resources for a sustained attack on the Championship. Although never a Grand Prix category, the 175cc class was an important one in Continental Europe and for this Moto Morini offered the Rebello DOHC racer alongside its simpler road models such as the 175cc Turismo offered here.
'285 XWE' was first registered in the UK in August 2024. The vendor ran the machine a few months ago and reports that the engine sounded very smooth, although recommissioning will be required (it will require an ignition switch (a simple two-wire unit) and a 6-volt battery.) A lovely, lightweight Italian roadster, this beautiful Moto Morini features stylish details such as finned brake hubs, delicate alloy racing levers, and a new seat. Accompanied by a V5C document.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles Website for all pertinent auction information.
