A rare Italian superbike with a Japanese heart
Said to be in good running order
Founded in Rimini in 1973, Bimota hit on a formula for success when it started constructing its own lightweight frames round bought-in engines from the best Japanese, Italian and German manufacturers. The YB9 SRI took over from the YB9 SR, which was already regarded as one of Bimota’s best ever products, in 1996 and was distinguished by its use of fuel injection. The “9” in the name reputedly denoted that it was the ninth Bimota to be powered by a Yamaha engine, specifically the 100bhp YZF600R “Thundercat” motor. With a lightweight aluminium beam frame, it could really whizz along. Production ended in 1998.
Examples such as this 1996 YB9 SRI very rarely come to market, and this one is both especially well-presented and well-provenanced, having formerly been part of the collection of Top Gear host Richard Hammond, with his name recorded in the logbook. A very original example in a pleasing overall condition, we are advised that it runs well and is to be sold with the current V5C, handbooks, MOT history and a folder of Bimota articles. Having been off the road since 2023, some light recommissioning is to be advised.
