Description
There are classics, and then there are conversation-stoppers. This 1959 Bedford CA, formerly in service with St John’s Ambulance, is very much the latter. A beautifully cared for and thoughtfully converted motorhome with genuine provenance, bags of character, and usability that belies its age.
Finished in excellent paintwork with no major marks or damage, it presents superbly. The refurbished wheels are in very good condition, all exterior components work as they should, and the fibreglass door cards are damage-free. Underneath it’s equally impressive – solid, rust-free, and treated with Lanoguard for long-term protection.
Mechanically, this Bedford is a peach. Retaining its original engine and 3-speed manual gearbox, it runs smoothly with no known issues. The engine has been rebuilt previously and is paired with a stainless steel exhaust system. A health check was carried out on purchase, all previous MOT advisories have been rectified, suspension bushes replaced, and the front brakes upgraded to Girling double cylinders with stainless inserts and cylinders.
Inside the cab, the dashboard is unmarked, gauges function correctly, and all switches work as intended – rare for a vehicle of this era. The rear living space is charming and practical, featuring interior lighting, ample storage, blinds, frosted glass on one side for privacy, and durable vinyl stone-effect flooring. The rear settee converts neatly into a day bed and is complemented by a gas stove, drinks optic, and 12v charger.
With just four previous owners, including a former member of the Jools Holland band, and an extensive history file complete with original St John’s Ambulance paperwork, this is a rare opportunity to own a genuinely sorted, usable classic with a great story.
Quirky, cool, and increasingly hard to find in this condition.
