The Maserati Coupe launched in 2002 would prove to be one of the companies’ best-selling cars. A new naturally-aspirated V8 engine provided strong performance and the transaxle gearbox ensured excellent weight distribution. Also new for this range was the option of a robotised manual or paddle shift gearbox – which Maserati named Cambiocorsa.
The GranSport version of the 4200 Coupe was launched in 2004. The styling changes by Frank Stephenson, then Maserati chief stylist, gave the Giugiaro design a much sharper, sportier look. The 4. 2 litre V8 underwent some detail improvement and a new exhaust with bypass valves raised the power output from 390bhp to 400bhp at 7000rpm, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 4. 9 seconds and a maximum speed of 180mph.
The Cambiocorsa 6-speed manual paddle shift transaxle also benefitted from improved software over the standard car with faster change speed in Sport mode. The double wishbone front and rear suspension used Maserati’s patent skyhook active damping technology and firmer, more track focused spring and roll bar settings.
GranSport specification also included new 19” wheels and a new interior including carbon centre console. In 2006, some further improvements were offered as a package – called LE for limited edition. These included a full leather interior, a special paint colour of Grigio Mercury for the wheels, Xenon headlights, heated front seats and memory adjustable driver’s seat and an Auditorium 200 sound system with CD changer as standard.
Of the 376 GranSport Coupes imported to the UK, only 79 were LE specification.
Registered on the 30th September 2006, it was supplied new in the UK by Maranello Concessionaires to it’s first owner in Kent and serviced exclusively by them until 2015, by which time it had covered 31, 000 miles. In 2014, sold to the second Surrey-based owner with services at Autofficina and Sports Italia and then sold again in 2022 to the third owner at around 58, 000 miles. Serviced by us since then and now showing 63, 900 miles. We have just fitted a complete new clutch and will complete a service and new MOT at point of sale.
