Description

For sale: Aermacchi Harley-Davidson 250 Ala d’Oro, circa 1966.
Our magnificent Aermacchi Harley-Davidson 250 was born around 1966 as the Ala Verde and later modified to the Ala d’Oro Racing version. Its air‑cooled single‑cylinder engine develops 30 horsepower at 9, 500 rpm for a top speed beyond 200 km/ h. As a racing machine it is not homologated for road use; it comes from an Italian collector. Nicely preserved and in perfect condition, this history‑charged example is ideal for an enthusiast of vintage racing or simply to admire in the living room.
The Aermacchi company was founded in 1913 by Giulio Macchi under the name Società Anonima Nieuport-Macchi, and it specialised in aeronautics and played an important role in the history of Italian aviation. In addition to designing seaplanes, fighters and military trainer aircraft, the company turned to motorcycle manufacturing from the 1950s through the 1970s. In April 1960, Harley‑Davidson took control of Aermacchi and the factory was moved a few kilometres to Schiranna near Varese. The brand name became Aermacchi Harley‑Davidson and then AMF Harley‑Davidson until 1978 when the factory was sold to the Castiglioni brothers, who developed their own brand: Cagiva.
