Classic 1961 MGA 1600 Mk II – Beautifully Restored, Long-Term Ownership
Offered for sale is a stunning example of the iconic MG MGA 1600 Mk II, lovingly owned and cared for by its current custodian for over 50 years—a true testament to its history and provenance.
First acquired in June 1971 in need of attention, this MGA has since undergone a comprehensive and sympathetic restoration, blending originality with thoughtful performance upgrades.
Mechanically, the engine was fully rebuilt early in ownership, enhanced with a MGB cylinder head featuring improved porting, alongside a half-race camshaft for increased performance. Additional upgrades include electronic ignition and a high-torque starter motor, ensuring reliable and responsive driving.
Between 1985 and the early 1990s, the car benefited from a meticulous body-off restoration. Particular attention was given to structural integrity, including extensive work to the sill areas to maintain correct door shut lines. The chassis was carefully repaired, addressing rust and reinforcing floor supports, followed by further detailed sheet metal work.
The body was refinished in striking Chariot Red two-pack paint, presenting beautifully today. Inside, the car features a fully refreshed interior with new leather seats, carpets, and trim, complemented by a light grey PVC hood.
Running gear has also been thoroughly sorted, including:
Overhauled rear springs and front suspension
New front disc brake calipers
New radiator and fuel tank
Upgraded 5-speed Ford Type 9 gearbox for improved drivability
This MGA represents a rare opportunity to acquire a well-documented, enthusiast-owned classic that has been continuously improved over decades. With its blend of originality, sensible upgrades, and long-term ownership, it is both a rewarding driver’s car and a cherished piece of British motoring history.
A truly special example, ready to be enjoyed.
