THE ubiquitous and highly successful MGB was thrown something of a curved ball for three years in the late 1960s when BL decided to drop the 3 litre big Healey engine into the iconic sports car, and in both roadster and GT form.
So here we have a delightfully preserved MGC GT, registered in May 1968 and clearly a classic with much love lavished on it over the decades. The chunky history file tells us all manner of things. For sure, it underwent major restoration during the 1980s with one specialist's bill totalling nearly 2k (and that was 1987!). The vehicle was totally stripped and new panels fitted. Before a re-spray, it was treated to a replacement low mileage engine, two front wings, front valance, both sills, inner wing panels, boot floor, petrol tank and rear quarter panels, new trim and new carpets.
At the time, the GT had covered 52, 000 miles from new (There's a raft of MoTs with the history file) and has only covered 68, 000 now. Put simply, the low mileage Healey engine that was dropped into the old girl back in 1987 has covered in the region of 16k since.
Invoices for parts, servicing and work continue all the way through to recent times, proving the amount of care, attention and money spent on this rare GT. At just a rough count, I counted 100 such papers with stacks of old MoTs there too.
The previous owner kept her for 20 years. And it is BRIGHT RED. Red as a ripe tomato and not as dull as it looks in my photos taken today!
A solid, mega straight and very pretty car, her panels and paint are of an excellent order as is the interior. Overdrive works and she is a pleasure to drive.
