Introduction: The Gentleman’s Choice
For collectors and drivers who understand that originality is the highest luxury — a rare opportunity to acquire an impeccable example of a late 2002 BMW E39 540i Sport finished in the timeless sought-after Topaz Blue Metallic.
An exclusive opportunity for the right buyer. The car drives beautifully in superb condition, carries strong service/ invoice history, and comes with V5, MOTs, full invoices and two keys — as seen in image 19.
The E39 is widely regarded as one of BMW’s finest platforms. While the E39 M5 grabs headlines, the 540i sits at the sweet spot — delivering the feel and much of the performance of an M5 without the constant costs and fuss.
Unlike the M5, which fails TFL NOx limits and is therefore non-compliant, the 540i is ULEZ compliant — a modern classic you can use without restriction. For London-based owners, this avoids daily ULEZ charges that can exceed £4, 000-£5, 000 per year with non compliant V8 performance cars of this era.
Powered by the legendary M62B44TU 4. 4-litre naturally aspirated V8, the E39 540i offers effortless torque, refinement, and a soundtrack few modern cars can replicate.
Preserved in original factory specification — exactly as BMW’s Munich engineers intended. One of very few E39 540i Sport LCIs in Topaz Blue with this specification and history.
Many have been modified without any cohesive vision, neglected, or broken for parts — clean, original examples are becoming noticeably harder to find; once gone, it may not return to the market for quite some time.
This E39
Some cars shout for attention. This E39 doesn’t. It was engineered in Munich at a time when precision outweighed theatre — when steering feel mattered more than screens, and performance was measured in balance, not noise.

Condition and Ownership History
Recent major preventative maintenance (over £800) ensures the next owner has nothing to do but drive. Mechanically, the car has been proactively maintained by me and the 3 previous owners using a mix of genuine (which I have exclusively used) and OEM+ components elsewhere.
The cooling system has been refreshed with only genuine BMW parts, including the expansion tank, levelling switch, two engine mounts, two coolant hoses, two radiator hoses and shell coolant/ antifreeze replaced. Previous owner maintenance includes regular servicing (with a full service carried out immediately prior to my ownership), water pump, two auxiliary belts, fuel-system cleaners, wheel refurbishment, expansion tank, multiple wheel alignments, gearbox service and multiple brake calipers, pads and tyres.
BMW specialist maintained — the engine was inspected with specific attention to known M62B44TU fault areas; timing-chain guides, PCV/ CCV (oil-separator), oil-filter housing gasket, valve-stem seals, VANOS and vacuum. The specialist confirmed no replacement is currently required; like any M62, these areas are monitored rather than replaced on a fixed schedule. The items listed above were refreshed under that inspection.
No immediate expenditure is required. Full invoices and history present. The car is ready to be enjoyed as intended.
The M62s are heavily silenced from factory. The OEM rear silencers and resonator were removed as part of a planned, period-correct twin-exit upgrade, giving the V8 a deeper, more purposeful tone. The car remains mechanically unaffected with no impact on drivability or performance. The original rear sections were not retained during a house move. Optional: the OEM, period-correct twin-exit finish can be completed by welding/ fitting the tips — a straightforward job for any exhaust specialist.
Paintwork is deep and glossy, reflecting beautifully in both sunlight and low-light conditions, as seen in images 10 and 20 — a testament to the car’s careful ownership — proudly sitting on its correct BMW Style 37 M Parallel alloys.
Honest Disclosure — Minor Items
This is an honest sale — for long-distance buyers’ peace of mind. The car is in excellent overall condition, with only typical, age-related marks, the odd bubble here and there that are reflected in the price and the MOT advisory notes—but beautiful overall.
- A small sized mark to the left rear bumper, light stone chipping to the bonnet and mirror caps, light visual wear to the front bumper and headlights, these would benefit from a polish to bring the best out of the car and that shine especially for summer. Front near side tyre recently changed, small marks on the alloy are now present from the garage carrying out the service.
- MOT advisory items — all advisory-only and routine for an E39: minor oil seepage noted — not excessive — inspected and considered age and usage-related. Rear brake pipes noted as corroded/ greased — remain serviceable; a known, straightforward E39 advisory that has been protected rather than neglected. Front subframe mounting area noted as corroded but not excessive — advised only: structurally sound. Rear brake discs and pads noted as wearing — braking performance remains strong and responsive: this is a routine wear item.
All advisory items are routine for an E39 platform and do not affect the way the car drives or performs.
The brake pipe and front subframe advisory are common, straightforward E39 items. As soon as I was made aware, I purchased the correct rust-cleaner sprays and corrosion-protection sealant — all included in the sale. Optionally: These areas can be easily cleaned, treated, and protected by the next owner at their leisure.
A BMW specialist inspected the vehicle after the MOT and confirmed it to be in excellent condition on inspection; the car drives, brakes, and performs exactly as it should, with no warning lights.
Experience: What it feels like
Before you even get in, the E39’s timeless body lines and understated elegance sit effortlessly in your peripheral vision, hinting at the intent behind its design.
The interior glows softly in that familiar BMW orange, a reminder of a time when precision mattered more than screens. Retaining the original BMW details, including the OEM toolkit and rechargeable glovebox torch, are both present and accounted for, reinforcing the car's originality and careful ownership.
With flawlessly functioning odometer pixels — a well-known and often troublesome fault on these cars — the interior presents exactly as it should. The classic BMW orange backlighting comes alive, bathing the buttons and instrument cluster in a warm, unmistakably period-correct glow. Combined with the analogue speedometer, it creates an atmosphere that instantly transports you back to BMW’s golden era, delivering that authentic analogue, driver-focused feel every time you sit in the driver’s seat.
Sit behind the wheel, turn the key and the V8 fires into life, then settles into that calm, authoritative, distinct V8 rumble. Everything feels solid, precise, and over-engineered — from the weight of the doors to the damping of the controls, each interaction is deeply engaging and still rewarding.
Effortless at motorway speeds — quiet, stable, and composed, yet immediately engaging and still rewarding in a way many modern cars struggle to replicate.
The controls are weighted because they were meant to be felt. The chassis does not simulate grip — it provides it. This was the era before performance became software-assisted.
The weighted hydraulic steering is a defining part of the experience — a reminder of a time before electrical assistance softened the connection between driver and road. Planted, confidence-inspiring chassis — pure mechanical grip from an era when BMW engineered cars around driving feel.
History
The E39 platform is widely regarded as BMW’s finest, and the 540i delivers much of the M5 experience with greater comfort, reliability, and long-term usability. With lower insurance premiums and overall running costs — thanks to reduced “M tax” on parts and less specialist labour — the 540i offers an ideal way to enjoy that classic E39 M5 feel without the negatives.
The 540i performed so exceptionally well that it outclassed much of the competition of its time — a testament to how well engineered it was, balancing daily usability with genuine enthusiast appeal.
Summary
Values of well-presented, in honest original examples continue to strengthen. Increasingly recognised as a future classic, cars in this desirable colour, specification and condition are becoming harder to find. This is a genuine enthusiast-owned 540i sport that presents and drives exactly as it should. High-spec, highly sought after — once gone, it’s gone.
Priced to reflect rarity, specification, condition, documented maintenance, and the absence of deferred work common to many other M62-powered cars. Considerable preventative maintenance has already been completed or professionally assessed, removing the uncertainty typically associated with M62 ownership — a major advantage over many examples now reaching the point where this work becomes necessary.
HPI confirmation and a cold-start, running, walk-around video are available upon request.
It’s a car for those who appreciate restraint, mechanical honesty and a time when BMW engineered cars to be driven — not explained.
Cars like this rarely come to market in this condition — particularly from enthusiast ownership.
Comparable examples at lower prices often require immediate investment or soon after purchase to reach the same standard.
