The Norton Dominator 650SS (Sports Special) is widely regarded as one of the finest British sporting motorcycles of the 1960s - a machine that combined a powerful parallel-twin engine with Norton's legendary Featherbed frame. Many enthusiasts consider it the pinnacle of the Dominator line, and it was often called the 'best of the Dommies'
The 650SS appeared in 1962 as a European-styled development of the export-only Norton Manxman 650. Norton had built the Manxman largely to satisfy the American appetite for bigger, faster twins, but the company realised it had something special and created a more sporting model for wider markets
Its main rival was the Triumph Bonneville T120, and Norton intended the 650SS to beat it where Norton had always excelled - handling. With its famous chassis, the 650SS became a genuine high-speed road bike. Contemporary road tests recorded around 119. 5 mph, making it one of the fastest production motorcycles of its day
This smart, matching numbers, example is a fully restored machine and is reported by its owner as running and riding very well
According to a copy of the factory records, it was despatched to Lawton and Wilson of Southampton on 30/ 04/ 1964 and still retains its original registration number, which appears to be transferable
The bike benefits from new carbs, electronic ignition, new exhausts and is still fitted with its optional rev counter
Because many original models were stripped over the years to act as donor bikes for custom project builds (like Tritons), original factory examples command a premium
UK-registered on a current V5C, correctly classed as Historic
