Description
1949 MG TC
There are beautifully restored MG TCs, and then there are those exceptionally rare examples that transcend restoration and become pieces of automotive craftsmanship. This magnificent TC belongs firmly in the latter category.
Finished in an elegant shade of Green over beautifully trimmed Beige leather, complemented by deep green Wilton carpeting, this is a motor car that immediately commands admiration. Every panel, every fitting and every carefully judged detail reflects an uncompromising commitment to authenticity and quality, resulting in what we believe to be one of the finest surviving MG TCs available on the market today.
The MG TC occupies a unique place in motoring history. Introduced in 1945, it became the sports car that captivated a generation of enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic, establishing MG as one of Britain’s great motoring ambassadors. Lightweight, charismatic and wonderfully engaging to drive, its timeless proportions remain as captivating today as they were more than three quarters of a century ago.
This exceptional example enjoyed remarkably devoted ownership, remaining with the same custodian from 1962 until 2024. Such continuity is increasingly rare and provides a wonderful insight into the affection this car has inspired throughout its life.
Between 2014 and 2016, the MG underwent an extraordinary nut and bolt restoration by the renowned Classic & Sports Cars Essex, widely respected for producing restorations of the very highest standard. No compromise was accepted and no corner was cut. The philosophy throughout was simple: restore the car correctly, regardless of the time or investment required.
Mechanically, it is every bit as impressive as its appearance suggests. The original XPAG engine has been professionally rebuilt to a fast road 1350cc specification, delivering stronger performance while preserving the unmistakable character, sound and mechanical honesty that define the MG TC. The gearbox and rear axle have also been comprehensively rebuilt, ensuring the driving experience is as rewarding as the car’s remarkable presentation.
The body was reconstructed around a new ash frame, while new silver painted wire wheels perfectly complement the flowing wings and upright radiator that have become iconic features of the model. A beautifully tailored bespoke hood, side screens and tonneau cover accompany the car, together with a luxurious Wilton carpet set that completes an interior of exceptional quality. Finishing touches such as the chrome luggage rack, supplied by Classic & Sports Cars Essex, perfectly balance elegance with practicality.
Perhaps no single aspect demonstrates the calibre of this MG more than the documentation accompanying it. The history portfolio is simply outstanding. Alongside its original buff log book sits an extraordinary collection of invoices totalling in excess of £55, 000, together with an extensive photographic record documenting virtually every stage of the restoration. Few classics offer such comprehensive evidence of the craftsmanship and investment that has gone into creating them.
Standing beside this MG, it quickly becomes apparent that this is far more than an immaculately restored classic. It is the product of thousands of hours of skilled craftsmanship, remarkable attention to detail and genuine passion for preserving one of Britain’s most important post-war sports cars. It possesses the depth of quality that only reveals itself the longer you study it, and the sort of integrity that serious collectors spend years searching for.
Whether displayed on the concours lawn, enjoyed on distinguished touring events or simply admired within a private collection, this exceptional MG TC will undoubtedly provide enormous pride of ownership for its next custodian.
At Turn Two Classics we are fortunate to encounter some wonderful motor cars, but examples of this calibre are exceptionally rare. Combining outstanding provenance, extraordinary craftsmanship and meticulous documentation, this is quite simply a collector’s quality MG TC that deserves to be considered among the very best surviving examples.
