1920 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost

‘Lady Moonpenny’

Chassis No. 26PE was ordered by Major Edward Fitzgerald of Green Street, Mayfair, London, on 15th December 1918 straight after World War I at a cost of £1, 850. Due to a waiting list after the war the body was not ready until 1920. Originally specified as a ’High Speed, Alpine Eagle’ having D rake steering, nickel fittings, ‘set in’ short levers and a 20-gallon fuel tank. The Major employed Henri Labourdette of Paris to produce the coachwork. In 1924 the Major then sent the car to Park Ward and had a very early Park Ward touring body fitted.

Following the Major’s death in 1931 the car was purchased by a dealer and sent to Australia passing through approximately 12 owners before its return to the UK in 1982, unfortunately without its body and in need of restoration as it had not been used since the 1940s.

26PE was purchased at an auction in 1982 and the current handsome sports touring body was beautifully crafted by Robinson of Gerralrds Cross but was not fitted. The car then remained unrestored until purchased by the current owner in 2004 who totally rebuilt the chassis and engine from the ground up and fitted the body.
This is not a concourse Silver Ghost, it would best be described as a properly ‘sorted’ vintage driver’s car, in excellent mechanical condition coupled with a mild patina giving the car a tremendous presence which attracts interest wherever she travels. This magnificent car has proven to be totally reliable and can be driven over long distances in comfort. The 7. 5 litre, straight six engine pulls the car along effortlessly at 50-60 MPH and she is ideally suited for long continental journeys. She feels taught and responsive to drive and this superb touring car has been regularly maintained to a high standard. The bright work, leather trim, dash, hood, hood bag, side screens and tonneaux covers are all in excellent condition. This magnificent car even benefits from having a period brass Elliott speedometer valued at £10, 000 alone. Lady Moonpenny also bears her original registration number issued to her in 1920.

Sadly, due to my parent’s advancing years and ill health, my father has requested that I assist him with helping this magnificent and much-loved car find a new home.
