SERVICES OFFERED
I have a Buma portable engine cylinder boring bar, and a matching set of honing equipment. I can offer boring and honing services for many classic and vintage vehicles; from cars and small commercial vehicles, to motorcycles, scooters and small industrial engines.
BORING BAR SIZE RANGE
The Buma portable boring bar has a boring range from 2. 2" (55. 88mm), up to 4 3/ 8" (111. 125mm), so will rebore most vintage car and small commercial/ industrial engines as well as motorbikes and scooters (Triumph, BSA, Norton, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Vespa, Lambretta, etc) provided they don't have Nikasil liners.
WORKSHOP
I can offer engine reboring and honing services at my workshop, particularly for those in and around the North London/ South Herts area.
IN SITU
I can undertake rebores in situ for many car and small commercial vehicles (subject to the conditions listed below).
VEHICLES MOST SUITED TO IN SITU REBORES
Nearly all in-line, front engined, 4 and 6 cylinder rear wheel drive cars of the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's, provided;
1. The cylinders are upright and have not been set at an angle to one side
2. There is sufficient clearance over all cylinders to fit the boring bar
3. There is sufficient headroom above the engine for me to stand on the block to hone the cylinders
4. The gearbox is not in the sump, i. e. Mini, 1100, etc.
5. The engine does not have wet liners, i. e. Triumph TR's
IN SITU REBORE PREREQUISITES
1. The vehicle and working area are horizontal, i. e. not on a steep hill or slope
2. The working area is dry
LOCATION
The vehicle should be under cover, e. g. in a barn, garage or shed.
POWER
There needs to be a standard electrical supply of 220-240v, within a reasonable distance of the vehicle (up to 50mtrs approx).
CLEARANCE
1. There must be at least 6ft clearance above the engine and sufficient clearance around the block for me to be able to reach it and fit the boring bar onto it.
2. I also need to be able to stand on the block for honing.
3. There should also be room to approach the vehicle from either side as well as the front.
LIGHTING
The working area should be as well lit as possible, although I do carry my own lighting for use if necessary.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
1. For engines that use studs to hold the cylinder head to the block, all retaining studs must be removed from the block before the boring bar can be clamped to it.
2. The crank journals must be taped up and the crank web to main bearing gap sealed as much as possible to prevent ingress of boring/ honing swarf.
REBORE AND HONE PRICING
VAT
There is no VAT to pay on the prices below as I am not VAT registered.
ALL REBORING AND HONING
The price includes boring to an agreed oversize with the customer and finishing the cylinder to a cross hatch finish with the honing tool. If the pistons have been supplied, checking and matching the ring gaps against the manufacturer's published specifications.
IN SITU REBORE AND HONE
From £35 per cylinder (depending on size, accessability, etc) plus a 50p per mile mileage charge from Borehamwood to your location.
WORKSHOP REBORE AND HONE
1, 2 & 3 cylinder industrial engines, and all motorcycle engines, £30 per cylinder.
4, 6 & 8 cylinder car and commercial engine blocks, £25 per cylinder.
PISTONS
Customers are welcome to provide their own oversize pistons either prior to the rebore, or after it if the expected oversize is not enough to remove the wear ridge, and a larger oversize is required. However, if the customer prefers I can supply the piston(s) as well.
WORKSHOP LOCATION
I am located (appropriately some might say) in Borehamwood, Herts, which is easily reachable via the A1, M1, and M25.
