In 1914 was an order for a new SIlver Ghost was placed by one Nicholas Tchinkine of Moscow Russia with Barker Torpedo coachwork specified. Due to the outbreak of hostilities, the car never made it to Russia & instead was commandeered by the War Department for use o the Kings Messenger service between Calais & the front lines.
In 1919, Its days in military service over, '9AD' was offered for sale at the Olympia auction organised by the Ministry of Munitions on 5th September 1919. The sale contained quite a number of government requisitioned cars that were now surplus to needs. 9AD was one J A Wallace Esq of Hampstead, London NW and he is its first recorded owner from 26th August 1920.
Around this time the car went back to Barker & had its current body fitted; that of an open drive limousine in which form it arrived in America. The car was purchased in this iteration by the famous circus impresario, John Ringling who kept the car along with several other Ghosts at his Sarasota Mansion Casa d'Zan. Upon his death, the car passed to the Sarasota Auto Museum & thence to the Imperial Palace collection before being acquired by the late Helmut Krogman of Lubeck in Germany.
We first handled this car about 10 years ago. The engine had been fully rebuilt but not correctly set up. We collected the car in Lubeck, had Carl Ford of The Priory Vintage Car Co, do a full set up & service on the car dramatically improving its running & operation. After the service, we drove the car back to Lubeck by way of the then running Esbjerg ferry with the car running better & better with every mile put on it.
The car is finished in a deep & lustrous purple making for a very striking machine. The interior is a full-on brocade affair with bedford cord & is in fine order. Black leather is installed up front to the drivers seats. Having been used in Germany the car is fitted with discreet flashers & indicators to satisfy the German MOT equivalent, the Tuff test.
Under the bonnet the car is beautifully detailed with all the brass & copper polished to a high shine, The engine has covered few miles since the rebuild so has superb compression & runs strongly & silently as one might expect. It is ready for immediate use & is a large tall imposing car that always draws attention to itself.
