Here's my beautiful Triumph Spitfire Mark IV 1300 in magenta. Fully restored around four years ago with a full body off rebuild, she is in stunning order all round. Superb chassis as you would imagine and an outstanding rot and rust (all metal) body tub. Magnificent bulk head, sills, door checks, arches and so on. Indeed you can go round the car and inspect all the factory spot welds to such areas and more. She has an MoT until February 2019 with no advisories and growls beautifully on the open road. Since her resto, she has been treated to a new clutch (this year), new carpets and a new hood. The seats, which look very much like Mark IV seats but in proper leather, are from a Mazda MX5 and slotted in perfectly. Polybushed throughout, everything else that needed doing was done. She wants for nothing other than a new and loving home. Spitfires are rarely seen as impressive as this. And if a Mark IV is for you - and I actually prefer the earlier, high revving 1300cc unit to the later 1500 - then you will struggle to find better.
There's plenty of Spits out there for more money than mine and they won't be as tidy as this one. I would suggest that first to see will buy. As ever, I am passing on my buying skills to the next owner and thereby keeping the price to such a reasonable level.
All my classic cars are treated as the equivalent of motoring antiques. This one, for example, is 45-years-old. They cannot be compared to the wife's six-month-old Chelsea tractor and they are bound to come with imperfections, quirks and bits and pieces that will need attention even if it is some time in the future. They do however come with oodles of charm, appeal and are there to be loved like a family pet. If you are new to the classic car scene, then please bear all this in mind. Most examples have clearly had work over the decades and I cannot predict how much or how little they will need in the future. That, I am afraid, is the nature of the beast in the world of classic cars. Motoring antiques is what they are. I love my Georgian dining table, but I can see all the scars and signs of previous woodworm. Had I wanted a brand new table, I would have gone to Oak Furniture Land. Well perhaps Maybe. Demand is outstripping supply these days and they don't make the old girls any more. So, make some allowances and drive away with a smile on your face!
