1958 BMW ISETTA 300 LHD BUBBLECAR (semi-auto version)
This diminutive, thoroughly delightful and cheerful bubblecar is finished in red with red trim piped in white complemented by a black sunshine roof. It has had only 2 previous keepers from new and a warranted mileage of only 20, 000 miles. The vehicle was fully restored some 10 years ago to a high standard and has completed very few miles since the restoration. The Isetta was nicknamed the bubble car due to its egg shape and bubble-like windows and it caused a sensation at its launch at the 1953 Turin Motorshow. This particular LHD 3 wheeler BMW Isetta bubblecar was registered on 16TH December 1958 in Bournemouth. It was ordered new from the factory with a Smiths selectorshift auto gearbox and clutch making this a very rare bubblecar indeed. Information from the Owner’s Club also confirms that it is one of only two known to exist. We can confirm that this car has matching numbers – engine chassis, registration etc.
This historic and tax-exempt vehicle was designed as an economy car intended to provide low cost transport for two persons with luggage. We can only image that the austerity and shortages caused by WWII made it a very welcome vehicle indeed.
The features include: rear bumper, front bumper hoops, BMW hubcaps and over riders, tinted glass, reserve petrol tank, sunroof, toolkit, locking engine cover, trico electric washers, chrome door hinges, white / red steering wheel, extra chroming to body and interior, M badges and Isetta stickers. The original and valuable registration number XRU 562 is sold with the car. The engine is a 298cc single cylinder 4 stoke and develops around 13hp with a max speed of 53mph.
The history folder includes: current and previous V5’s, DVLA paperwork, copy of original sales brochure, write ups on the Isetta, photo pf the car parked in Bournemouth in 1958, various other Isetta memorabilia, Isetta Gazettes, various folders and envelopes.
