The Appeal
The Mandarini workshop of Milan is one of those tiny Italian concerns that was born out of the nation’s sheer enthusiasm for wheeled transport. Still in existence as a classic car restoration business, in the 1950s and 60s it dabbled with building a small run of Fiat-based racers.
The beautiful design was very ‘of the moment’ and evoked racers like Michelotti’s Ferrari Vignale Spider, various Siata and Nardis and Lancia’s D23 and D24. The aluminium bodies were built by neighbouring Carrozzeria Colli, which was set up by ex-Touring employees and is best known for bodying Fangio’s Alfa Romeo Disco Volante. The first cars were powered by 750cc Fiat engines with later ones like this receiving the 1,100cc motor. Mandarinis competed, using Fiat badges, at the Mille Miglia and other high profile events.
Each car was vanishingly expensive and its likely Mandarini lost money on each one. Total numbers are hard to identify, but certainly ‘not many’ would cover it. Production began in 1955 and this 1964 car was likely amongst the last to leave the works. It is in good condition with some light age to note. It carries Italian registration and FIA Historic Passport.
Here is a chance to acquire a historic racer that will likely fox even the most knowledgeable of onlookers. A pretty and interesting addition to any classic collection.
