  • Comes with a considerable list of spares

The Appeal

The Land Rover is still a common sight on British roads - and it's little wonder. These quintessentially British classics are rugged simplicity incarnate, ideal for all manner of applications. If you were to ask us to choose one, though, the Station Wagon variant would be far too tempting. Something about extended cabins offers so much stature to a vehicle.

This particular 1970 Series 2 A 109 is exactly that - with a desirable safari roof and deluxe seat options setting it beyond your standard 4x4. No doubt about it, if you're after a highly usable Landie, this is one to get.
This Land Rover has been sympathetically maintained over nearly a decade of ownership, presenting in strong mechanical condition with a charming patina. The original 2.6-litre engine has been upgraded to a more robust 2.5-litre petrol engine from an early Defender, paired with a Land Rover Series 3 gearbox.

Ultimately, this retro off-roader has plenty going for it - and we're no doubt there are plenty of enthusiasts ready and waiting to get behind the wheel.

The Condition

  • The vehicle looks great for its age and has benefitted from sympathetic maintenance
  • The chassis is reportedly solid, painted, and will stand any inspection
  • The vehicle had previously been hand-painted but has been cut back and polished, now having a good patina
  • Some areas of paint loss and blistering, largely in the usual spots (doors, arches)
  • Original steel chassis appears free from structural corrosion
  • The interior is very tidy with near-new front seats of the correct pattern fitted as part of an earlier restoration
  • Dashboard carries light signs of use but is highly original with legible instruments
  • No music player currently fitted
  • Door cards and floors are nicely presented
  • There are some marks and slight damage to the headlining
  • In total this car can seat 12!

The Mechanics

  • Defender 17H 2.5L 4-cylinder petrol engine
  • Manual transmission with 4 gears + Overdrive, taken from a S3 Land Rover
  • During ownership, the Land Rover has received:
    • A new full exhaust system
    • 4 shock absorbers
    • Rear springs
    • Hardy Spicer joints
    • 4 steps and a rear step
    • Cylinder head stripped, pressure tested, skimmed, rebuilt, and refitted
    • Replacement Webcon carburettor
    • All wheel brake cylinders and brake shoes replaced
    • New starter motor
  • The vendor reports that the gear change is easy, and both low and high ratios work as they should
  • We also understand that the Fairey overdrive works nicely
  • The gearbox reportedly slips out of second gear on overrun occasionally
  • Some play is reported in the rear differential
  • Rugged leaf spring suspension and no power steering - the Land Rover still offers a very authentic experience
  • We understand the car to be driving very well, and by all accounts is ready and waiting to go
