THE APPEAL
The Range Rover Classic is the original and best of the breed, the later example the very first luxury icon to wear the badge, marking the model’s evolution from a more car-like alternative to a Land Rover to a vehicle for aspirational social climbers.
It was in 1984 when the Range Rover really started moving up in the world, when an automatic gearbox and leather upholstery became available. A 1986 facelift introduced a plastic grille with pedestrian safety in mind and an optional valance with twin fog lights, along with many other subtle improvements, which continued apace as the Range Rover’s luxury stature increased.
It’s no surprise, then, to find that good ones are highly prized collectors’ cars these days – especially the very last models from 1991 onwards, which came with a 3.9-litre derivative of the legendary Rover V8 engine, equipped with electronic fuel injection.
This one is a really smart example, which benefits from having recently has a replacement automatic gearbox fitted by a respected Land Rover specialist, as well as new boot floor – a very common Range Rover problem that the next owner won’t have to worry about.
Otherwise, it has very good original bodywork and a generally good interior, while the chassis appears to be in great order.
Finished in Plymouth Blue, which is one of the most sought-after colours for a late 3.9 EFi model, it’s the perfect spec – a Vogue with desirable “teddy bear” velour trim, body-coloured alloy wheels and a fog lamp front valance giving it an upmarket air that epitomises the very best of the seminal luxury Range Rover.
The car has recently passed an MOT and is sold in full working order, as a generally excellent example that would benefit from some very minor cosmetic improvements. front.jpg957.26 KB
