The Appeal

A brand new 290bhp 4L V8, E-Type-infused styling and the sort of hardy commitment to wood and leather trimming that evokes classic 50s and 60s GTs, all made the original X100 XK8 a sales success. Those qualities, plus the car’s cossetting ride, explain their enduring popularity with enthusiasts.

As with any emerging classic, good, low mileage examples are the first to be valued. This 2001 XK8 has covered just 72,000 documented miles and is smartly presented in Platinum Silver metallic with ivory leather. The current keeper acquired it in 2020 to scratch a Jaguar-shaped itch and has clearly cherished it, carefully garating it in a climate-controlled unit and only using it in the summer.

As a later, first-generation X100 it benefits from the light cosmetic improvements and more comfortable front seats with separate headrests. It is in tidy condition and comes with an impressive and very detailed history file. This shows extensive welding and underside restoration work in 2022.

With advisory-free MOT to November 2025 this is a smart and very usable example of the highly rated X100.

“For years I have always wanted to own a Jaguar, its beautiful shape, the sound of a powerful engine and the pride in British manufacturing and design always stayed with me. Then years later I got the chance to actually buy, now that they were a lot cheaper. Actually getting into one sliding into the drivers seat and looking down the long bonnet of the XK8 was quite breathtaking. For looking around the cockpit (that's how I always described it), I was surrounded by sheer beauty, the walnut and leather dashboard and door fittings and above all, the quality of the interior.

“Turning on the engine you are immediately are aware that the beast has come alive. As you pull away it is quite evident of the power of the 4 litre engine, acceleration is instant and quite staggering and you have to keep an eye on the speed, This not a car for boy racers. The J gate gear stick is a joy to use, I preferred to drive in manual mode as I found there was a better response from the engine in cornering. but never the gear change is as smooth as you could wish for. You are soon aware that you own a car. of quality and status, people will come over to you and say, "That's what a Jaguar should look like.”

“The reason why I am selling this magnificent car is due to other circumstances.I am just not using it enough and I feel that some one else should enjoy the Jaguar experience.

The vendor says:

“I have never had the original service book for this vehicle but have all the records of work carried out on this car from 11/03/2008 I know that early on it's life the Jaguar did have a complete engine rebuild carried out by the original dealer. This was as a result of timing chain failure. The owner of that time decided to by a new car and the dealer took over ownership of the Jaguar and carried out the complete overhaul of the engine as a personal job. Hence I have no records of this work carried out. I have spoken to a good friend of his and he verified that the work was actually done. This gentleman actually bought it from that dealer because he was so impressed with it and drove it back to Coventry from the South Coast area.

“Have never driven the Jaguar in the winter months but put onto SORN and stored it in my garage with a dehumidifier constantly running, on battery charge and covered with a dust sheet. This was for about 5 or 6 months of the year. It has always been cleaned and polished on a regular interval. This was primarily to avoid the dreaded gritting of the local roads.”

“The overall condition of the exterior, in my opinion, is very good. The repair work that has been previously described has been very minor, slight scrapes, mostly from moving in and out of my garage. This jaguar just fits into my garage, and it's a tight fit, but the car has never been in any collision since I have had it. Looking at the boot lid, there is a slight crease in the top; it looks like somebody tried closing the lid with something that was producing upward pressure. This is very difficult to see and very small, so I left it as it was. There are a few very small areas to the surrounding grey strip around the windows where the paint wants touching up, slight marks on the wheel rims, but they are very small. The general paintwork is in very good condition, a local bodyshop specialist carried out the work that I had done. I can't think of anything else that is obvious to me. I have been particularly careful in protecting the paintwork with good quality polish, and the car has been under a dust cover whilst in the garage.

“As far as the underneath of the vehicle goes, I had the Jaguar put up on the ramps at my local garage for me to have a look underneath. Yes, due to its ag,e there is expected rust but nothing that has shown up to be serious on the MoTs. The Adamesh exhaust system replaced everything right up to the main silencer box. This being stainless steel is still in place and has passed the MOT, so I did not replace it. Another thing to mention is to do with the headlamps. On the Jaguar XK8 the headlamp lenses are made of glass and not Perspex as is the case in other cars. This does lead to the small problem of condensation inside the lamp itself which leads to a small amount of water collecting at the base of the lamp causing discolouration of the reflector. This is a common problem which can be seen in a car. I have dealt with this problem by placing a small bag of silica at the back of the lamp housing, which keeps the lens dry. I have used this for some time now with great success. The staining does not appear to affect the light beam at all. Some owners have just replaced the lights altogether, and it would be up to the new owner to decide.

“The interior is in excellent condition, yes, the cream leather work does show some wear and tear as would be expected, but is still in remarkably good condition. From what I can se,e I don't think that the rear seats have ever been used; they look in perfect condition. The leather work around the doors and dashboard is also in good condition. I have been keen to clean and polish these surfaces with leather food and cream polish to keep them in good condition.

“All the dials are working perfectly and in very good condition, all interior lights are working, plus all the illumination of the dials. The steering wheel is in excellent condition, along with the handbrake, which is fully working correctly. The rear windscreen does not show any apparent defect, and the front screen shows its age through very slight abrasion from the dus,t etc. Both door handles operate correctly, plus the window switches, locks and all switches on the steering column are in good order. Floor mats still bear the Jaguar name with signs of slight wear, as to be expected. I am not aware of any corrosion coming through on the floor panel.

“The boot is in excellent condition, having lifted out all the contents to check the floor. There is the original tool kit in place (as far as I can see). And the spare tyre has never been used and is in perfect condition. All the carpets are in first-class condition. The battery is also in very good condition, having been kept on trickle charge when not in use. There is a 6 CD changer installed that is fully operational ( I have used it on many occasions).”

“I have never had a formal manufacturer's service book. That must have disappeared a long time ago. There are all the receipts for work done before my ownership, and I have all the records of work done to the car since I purchased the Jaguar. MoT records included. There were eight previous owners before me. This is a factory standard vehicle, and the only modification I have made is the addition of the new exhaust, except for the original stainless steel large box. The engine starts up perfectly. I have regularly started up the engine and run it for a few minutes to check that all is okay. Gear changing, whether in manual mode or automatic is perfect, and there are no suspicious noises or vibrations that I'm aware of. When travelling, there are no obvious sounds of wind noise coming through the door or window seals. The brakes seem to be very efficient, and there are no signs of wear, to my knowledge. Tyres are in excellent condition; my total mileage since owning this car is 4276 miles, so no problems with the suspension or tyres.”
