Sub-21,000-mile example of Renaultsport’s celebrated Clio 172 hot hatch
All-important cambelt and water pump replaced in February 2022 at 19,643 miles
MOT valid until 13 April 2027, and ULEZ compliant
The Appeal
The Renaultsport Clio 172 is surely one of the defining hot hatches of its era. Launched in 1999 and produced until 2004, before the arrival of the Clio 182, it combined the compact dimensions and low weight of Renault’s supermini with a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engine to create one of the great modern hot hatch recipes.
Refinement and luxury were never the Clio 172’s main priorities. Instead, its appeal lay in its immediacy and driver involvement, with sharp steering, excellent chassis balance, strong performance and a wonderfully engaging character. Light, responsive and eager, it quickly earned a loyal following and has since become a cult favourite among hot hatch enthusiasts.
This example has covered fewer than 21,000 miles from new and is finished in a timeless silver-and-black colour scheme. With such low mileage, it may well appeal to collectors, though its next owner would surely be tempted to enjoy it as Renault intended on their favourite B-roads.
In an era of increasingly heavy, complex and technology-laden performance cars, the Clio 172’s analogue feel and compact proportions have only become more appealing. Accompanied by a long MOT and benefiting from ULEZ compliance, it could even make a highly entertaining retro daily driver for the committed hot hatch fan.image.png1.74 MB
