The Appeal
The 340 and its smaller-engined 240 sibling were the last cars to use the Mk2 body style, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful four-wheeled shapes of the '60s. Slimmer bumpers are the only real visual clue to these later cars, which were produced for just two years.
This is a very early 340, one of just 2,265 RHD models built. It is one of the best we’ve seen in a very long time, an impression helped by its sought-after combination of gunmetal grey metallic with red leather. Although an older restoration, thanks to the care of its handful of keepers you would hardly know. The work was clearly done well - a quick check of the door fit, front wing finish and sill condition confirms that.
Any Mk2 is as much about the interior as the exterior, and this car doesn’t disappoint. In 2025, the current keeper, a Jaguar enthusiast collector, spent £4,600 having the wood trim professionally renewed. Even the sun visors were retrimmed.
As a late model 340 this car has the sweet-revving 3.4L XK unit, the one preferred by getaway drivers, and the much-improved 4spd full synchromesh gearbox with optional overdrive. As such, it would work well as a touring car.
It is a mark of the car’s condition and the vendor’s approach to maintenance that it comes with a voluntary MOT valid to August 2026. There are, of course, no advisories. This is a seriously tidy and well-specified example of these stylish cars.
The vendor says:
“The car is in exceptionally good condition and is probably one of the best 340 out there. I have a small collection of cars and they are better for driving. I am selling this great car simply because I’m not using it enough.”
