The Appeal
The B1000 was such a staple of post-war East German roads that the Stasi equipped them as ‘camper vans’ to discreetly ‘collect’ and transport political prisoners.
170,000 of these practical, reliable forward control vans were built over nearly 30 years. This one was amongst the last to leave the IFA factory before it was fully taken over by Volkswagen. It is a final-edition B1000/1 with robust 1.3L VW mechanicals built by Barkas under licence.
Just 1,900 of these were produced, so despite the popularity of the profile, this is a rare model. It has been restored so presents in very good condition. The white and black paint scheme is accented by teal wheels and similar trim to the roofrack and ladder. Inside there is a practical seven-seat layout with rear bed and plenty of storage.
It benefits from many new parts - plus a raft of spares- and is said to run and drive well without any issues. It is a view supported by the fresh technical inspection, which runs to February 2027.
The modular seating and sleeping arrangements, along with the original Webasto heater, make it ideal for both road trips and camping adventures.
