THE APPEAL

The W124 series was first launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1987 after the predecessor, the W123, ceased production. It was designed by Chief Designer, Bruno Sacco, who was also responsible for the design of the saloon variant. Aside from the saloon and coupé versions, there was the much more desirable cabriolet model. The Mercedes 300 CE 24 is fitted with the 3.0-litre straight-six 24-valve M194 engine that produces 220hp and can achieve 0-60mph in around 8.6 seconds.
This 1992 example is in good condition, having spent the past eight years being cared for by a Mercedes enthusiast and, prior to that, spent several years in Spain's warm, dry climate. The car has been inspected and is ready for the next custodian to enjoy the luxury four-seater Mercedes cabriolet experience.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Some invoices are present for previous parts purchased, and work carried out
  • Currently registered on a Dutch license plate
  • Initially sold in Germany
  • The Mercedes spent several years in Spain
  • It was imported to the Netherlands by a Dutch enthusiast in 2015
  • Said to have been maintained by Mercedes specialists

THE INTERIOR

  • Black leather upholstery
  • Good condition
  • Original Becker Radio
Finished in Black leather (261), the seats have perforated centres and are in excellent condition with minimal signs of any wear to the usual high-wear areas such as the bolsters. There is an optional armrest fitted, which is also in good condition. The rear seat is also superb and doesn't appear to have seen an enormous amount of use. Both door cards are free from any damage and have a wooden inlay to match the centre console.
The dashboard is free from any splits or damage, and the instrument cluster is said to be working correctly, with an odometer reading of 155,605 kilometres or 96,688 miles. The Mercedes has cruise control, and the stalk is in good condition, as is the other switchgear in the centre console. Also in the centre console is the factory Becker head unit, which looks in good order, and the wood trim around the console is free from any cracks to the lacquered finish.
The black carpets look in good order with no signs of excessive wear. There is a set of E-Klasse mats fitted, which are in good condition. Inside the boot is clean and tidy.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Finished in Brilliant Silver
  • Eight-hole alloy wheels
  • Hydraulic folding Black fabric roof
The Brilliant Silver paintwork of the Mercedes is in good condition all over, with no obvious chips or scratches to mention. There may be a few minor age-related chips, but these are few and far between. The panels align well with an equal gap, and no dings or dents were spotted.
The headlights and indicators are free from any damage to the lenses, and the grille has a bright finish with the three-pointed star sitting pride of place. Further up, the windscreen is free from noticeable chips or scratches.
The electrically operated fabric roof operates correctly and is in good condition with no damage or excessive creasing. At the rear, the classic-style ribbed rear lights are in good order with no damage, and the badges have a tarnish-free finish.
Fitted with the original eight-hole wheels, they are in excellent condition with no signs of tarnishing or corrosion to the faces. The tyres are Continental on the front and Uniroyal on the rear, all of which have a good amount of tread remaining.

THE MECHANICS

  • 3.0-litre straight-six
  • Four-speed automatic gearbox
  • Cruise control
Fitted with a 3.0-litre straight-six, the Mercedes is reported to fire up as it should, with no issues reported. The engine bay is clean and tidy, and no leaks were spotted when the photographs were taken.
The 300 CE is said to pull well through the gears, which have a smooth change and have no untoward noises coming from the transmission. The brakes are also said to bring the Mercedes to a stop.

SUMMARY

The Mercedes 300 CE 24 is quite a rare car today, and finding one that has been well cared for like this one is somewhat of a rarity. The car is said to have been well maintained by Mercedes specialists for all its life, and the condition speaks for itself.
A fantastic luxury Mercedes Cabriolet that turns heads and offers superb comfort and excellent performance. It's certainly a 90s classic worth holding onto.
